1. 8 13 START Its the start of the fourth race in the Americas Cup series off Newport, Rhode Island. For the British challenger, Sceptre, a do-or-die attempt to keep from losing by a shutout. But, eager for a good start, Sceptre is three feet over the line at the gun, and loses vital minutes turning back and starting over. Meanwhile, the American defender, Columbia, seen here at close quarters, romps off with an advantage that the more ponderous Sceptre cant hope to make up. Columbia heels going through a respectable sea. The sixteen-to-eighteen knot breeze is on the heavy side.
